Basketball

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, typically consisting of five players each, compete to score points by shooting a ball through the opposing team’s hoop or basket. The game is played on a rectangular court, and the objective is to outscore the opponent by making more field goals or free throws.

Players can advance the ball by dribbling—bouncing the ball while running—or by passing it to teammates. The game consists of four quarters, and it is played under a set of rules that govern aspects like fouls, scoring, and violations.

Basketball is characterized by its fast pace and requires a combination of physical skills, such as agility, coordination, and strength, along with strategic thinking and teamwork. It is widely regarded as one of the most popular sports globally, with professional leagues like the NBA and college basketball attracting significant audiences. The sport was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith in the United States and has since evolved into various formats, including streetball, women’s basketball, and international competitions.
